GE Inspection Technologies’ robotic crawler with sampling scoop is designed to remotely operate in underground radioactive waste tanks and sludge handling applications. 

The remote crawler can fit through a 12-inch access riser, move around inside the tank gathering residual waste samples from multiple locations not accessible beneath the access risers. The residual waste can be dropped into a collection sample container and brought to the surface for analysis.

An experienced team of tank farm workers installed an Off Riser Sampling System (ORSS) in a single-shell tank C-103. The GE Rovver with Sampling Scoop is lowered into the tank and is capable of being controlled remotely. This improves the team’s ability to obtain residual waste samples in locations not accessible beneath access risers.

The team nicknamed the Rovver “Possum,” because it is lowered into the tank by its tail.

Once the Rovver was lowered into the tank, a glove box was installed to contain any potential contamination.

The Rovver made a flawless entry into the tank, fitting through a 12” diameter pipe. It gathered residual waste samples from multiple locations within the tank. The samples are extracted using the scoop and transferred to a container before returning to the surface.
